In January 2023, we launched the inaugural Smart Works Unemployment Index.
The Index is a robust study examining unemployment issues affecting our clients across the UK. It covers three areas: experiencing unemployment, experiences of the interview process, and the meaning of having a job, and offers a unique insight into the barriers women across the UK face when seeking employment in today’s landscape.
The 2023 Report
The 2023 Index analyses 3,784 conversations with those supported by Smart Works throughout 2023, offering a unique insight into the barriers women across the UK face when seeking employment in today’s landscape.
Although we hoped this year’s report would bring some much-needed positive news about the recruitment landscape, sadly, this is not the case – one year on from the launch of the inaugural report we’ve observed a deterioration in the conditions under which women are seeking work.

The inaugural Smart Works Unemployment Index analyses a three-month pilot study carried out at the end of 2022. Inspired by the stories of the women who walk through our doors every day, we wanted to ensure that our clients’ voices are heard and understood by those who have the power and means to create a better route to employment for women in the UK.
The inaugural study lays the groundwork for future iterations of the Index, highlighting the extensive barriers women face when seeking employment.
This report was launched on January 31st 2023, at the House of Lords.
