All of our dressing and interview coaching service is delivered by a team of highly skilled volunteers.

“A wonderful organisation and an empowering experience. I feel more reassured about how I present myself in the actual interview.”SMART WORKS CLIENT

We believe that it can be as rewarding for the volunteers as it is for the clients to be involved in an organisation that is promoting self-belief, confidence and encouragement to women.

There are four main volunteer roles which we need at Smart Works:

Dressing volunteer

Dressing volunteers help our clients find the right clothes for their interview.  To be a good dressing volunteer you need an eye for style, great people skills and plenty of patience.  The minimum commitment is one day per week.

Corina – Thursday Styling Volunteer

Please give a brief overview of yourself – where are you from?

I’m an illustration graduate living in Stockport. I work part time and spend my Thursdays at Smart works.

What encouraged you to volunteer with Smart Works?

My university tutor told me about Smart Works and it sounded like an amazing place to be. Not only does it encompass Fashion (which I love) but also helping women to achieve their goals and boosting their confidence – it was a no brainer!

What is the most enjoyable thing about volunteering with Smart Works, and your specific volunteer role?

I love working with women and helping them to look and feel their best for an interview – their confidence improves in front of your eyes! I love all the clothes and seeing people try on things they wouldn’t normally choose but end up loving themselves in.

Coming into the office, greeted with smiles and knowing that you can make a real difference in someone’s life that day – and by something that seems so simple – Clothes! As well as the rewarding feeling it’s also super fun to go through the rails of beautiful clothes we have!

What is the most notable difference you see in clients when you style them?

Seeing that confidence shine through, there is always a noticeable change in their stance, their smile, everything! Also seeing themselves in a different light, our clients often say, “I didn’t think I looked good in dresses” or “I didn’t think I suited this colour”.

It really is amazing to see how much someone can change in confidence when they feel they look the part.

What gives you an extra special buzz from volunteering at Smart Works?

Hearing feedback from the women we have supported is always lovely and we often get thank you cards (even chocolates!) Hearing how the women have really loved the experience and how happy they are to have visited us, always puts a smile on my face!

Interview volunteer

Interview volunteers help clients prepare for their interview by focusing on their skills, their confidence and their presentation. You will need a background in HR, recruitment or senior management to join this programme. The minimum commitment is one day per month.

Lynne – Tuesday Interview Coach

Please give a brief overview of yourself – where are you from?

I am from the Stockport area. My career background has been varied incorporating local government, adult careers guidance as well as recruitment, training and management of staff and volunteers within the charity sector. I love fashion, live music, running and yoga.

What encouraged you to volunteer with Smart Works?

A friend who volunteers for Smart works GM told me about the role of Interview Coach. Talking to her gave me a great insight into the work of the charity.  I loved the sound of it and felt that with my knowledge and experience I could offer some support with helping  women succeed at interviews.

What is the most enjoyable thing about volunteering with Smart Works, and your specific volunteer role?

Meeting so many fabulous  women from all ages and backgrounds and hearing their personal stories is a real privilege.  Helping them to recognise their strengths and abilities so they can effectively market themselves and go on to secure the job they want is immensely rewarding.

What is the most notable difference you see in clients when you coach them?

I find that after a short coaching session clients are  more confident answering some of the trickier interview questions and they have a much better awareness of how to prepare for job interviews.

What gives you an extra special buzz from volunteering at Smart Works?

Working with such dedicated and enthusiastic staff and volunteers! Seeing the amazing difference Smart Works makes to women‘s self belief and confidence along with our very impressive employment success rate is so inspiring.
