Volunteer Your Time
The Smart Works service is carried out to the highest possible standard by our impressive volunteer teams.
We ask for a significant amount of time from Smart Works volunteers, to deliver a skilled service that needs expertise, empathy and understanding. In return, we value our volunteers, treat them with respect, keep them informed and let them know the all important good news when one of their clients goes on to get the job. We also run exclusive training and networking events to give volunteers the chance to meet their peers and share ideas.
“I love the way you really understand that volunteers need to feel valued and get recognition. This is the first time I have experienced this as a volunteer. I had come to think that being ignored, taken for granted, exploited and on the receiving end of admin chaos was the norm. You are proving to me that there is hope and that there really are areas of exemplary practice in the voluntary sector.”Jenny Rogers, Executive Coach and Smart Works London Interview Volunteer
If you would like to consider joining Smart Works as a volunteer, we run four main volunteer programmes. We do currently have a waiting list for some of the roles, but it is always worth getting in touch if there is a specific role you are interested in.
Dressing volunteer programme
Dressing volunteers work closely with each client to build their confidence, listen to their requirements, help them see their own potential and find the perfect outfit for their interview. To be a good dressing volunteer you need an eye for style, enormous compassion and empathy, and plenty of energy and patience. The minimum commitment is one day per week (weekday volunteers) or one day per month (Saturday volunteers).
Interview training volunteer programme
Our interview volunteers listen to our clients’ specific areas of concern surrounding their performance at interview. They support them to feel better prepared to answer the tough questions, and to talk about their skills and experiences in the most authentic and confident way possible, and understand what is expected at interview. You will need a background in HR, recruitment or senior management to join this programme and familiarity with a coaching approach is preferable but not absolutely necessary. The minimum commitment is one day per month. We do not currently offer this programme on Saturdays.
Wardrobe volunteer programme
Our wardrobe volunteers are invaluable. They keep the whole Smart Works system running smoothly by maintaining the highest possible professional standards in all our beautiful dressing rooms. The role involves sorting, steaming and hanging, ensuring that our high quality clothing donations are immaculately presented for our clients. You need to be highly organised and tidy, love clothes and have lots of energy. The minimum commitment is one day per week (not Saturdays).
Administration volunteer programme
Smart Works admin volunteers support the running of our offices by answering phones, greeting clients, inputting data, filing and helping with other office duties. You will need excellent customer service skills and general office skills. The minimum commitment is one day per week.
To apply for a volunteer position, please download the volunteer application forms for the area where you are based.
Corporate Volunteer Interview teams
From time to time we train and take on volunteer interview coaching teams or dressing volunteers from corporate or retail organisations. If you or your team are interested in exploring this opportunity and finding out what options are currently available, please contact our UK Head of Volunteers.
Corporate Stock days
At Smart Works, we sometimes need extra support in helping our beautiful dressing rooms stay looking fabulous and ensuring all our clothing donations are processed effectively. If your team would be interested in volunteering with us for half a day sorting clothes, steaming, hanging and generally sprucing up the dressing area, please contact our Partnerships Manager.
