All of our dressing and interview coaching service is delivered by a team of highly skilled volunteers.

“A wonderful organisation and an empowering experience. I feel more reassured about how I present myself in the actual interview.”SMART WORKS CLIENT

We believe that it can be as rewarding for the volunteers as it is for the clients to be involved in an organisation that is promoting self-belief, confidence and encouragement to women.

There are four main areas that in which we need volunteers to help at Smart Works:

Dressing volunteer

Dressing volunteers help our clients find the right clothes for their interview.  To be a good dressing volunteer you need an eye for style, great people skills and plenty of patience.  The minimum commitment is one day per week.

Karen and Corina – Thursday Styling Team

Please give a brief overview of yourself – where are you from?

K: I am based in Chorlton, South Manchester, Mum to three girls (and a dog)

C: I’m an illustration graduate living in Stockport. I work part time and spend my Thursdays at Smart works.

What encouraged you to volunteer with Smart Works?

K: I’ve worked in recruitment and HR most of my career but have always loved clothes and fashion. After hearing about Smart works through a suit drive at work a few years ago I then revisited the Smart works website to see if I could volunteer and combine the two.

C: My university tutor told me about Smart Works and it sounded like an amazing place to be. Not only does it encompass Fashion (which I love) but also helping women to achieve their goals and boosting their confidence – it was a no brainer!

What is the most enjoyable thing about volunteering with Smart Works, and your specific volunteer role?

K: I love working with women and helping them to look and feel their best for an interview – their confidence improves in front of your eyes! I love all the clothes and seeing people try on things they wouldn’t normally choose but end up loving themselves in. I particularly when clients who got a job come back to see us for a second dressing.

C: Coming into the office, greeted with smiles and knowing that you can make a real difference in someone’s life that day – and by something that seems so simple – Clothes! As well as the rewarding feeling it’s also super fun to go through the rails of beautiful clothes we have!

What is the most notable difference you see in clients when you style them?

K: Confidence ! When we get the outfit right you can see a real change in the way the client holds themselves, stands etc. It really is amazing to see how much someone can change in confidence when they feel they look the part.

C: Seeing that confidence shine through, there is always a noticeable change in their stance, their smile, everything! Also seeing themselves in a different light, our clients often say, “I didn’t think I looked good in dresses” or “I didn’t think I suited this colour”.

What gives you an extra special buzz from volunteering at Smart Works?

K: Meeting the women who come through our doors from all walks of life and working with the other amazing volunteers in the office.

C: Hearing feedback from the women we have supported is always lovely and we often get thank you cards (even chocolates!) Hearing how the women have really loved the experience and how happy they are to have visited us, always puts a smile on my face!
